Glitch’s Pick of the Month: May 2012
GRENDEL – TIMEWAVE ZERO – METROPOLIS RECORDS
Grendel started out in 1997 under a different name, but due to the band splitting up the name was changed into the current one. VLRK continued under the name Grendel, which originates from a character from the old Anglo-Saxon tale ‘Beowulf’.
In 2000 Grendel’s first promo CD was released which included the Dutch dance floor hit ‘Strangers’. Within a very short period of time the promo was being played at many locations throughout the Netherlands and internationally.
To follow this up, the “End of Ages EP” was released in 2002 and marked new territory for Grendel with tracks such as the international hit title-track “End of Ages”, the pounding “Catastrophe” and the intrigueing “Noisome”. With the unorthodox and original use of orchestration, obscure samples incorporated with harsh and pounding EBM structures this release again recieved almost only great reactions from both the media and listeners and would set Grendel’s sound for the future.
In 2003, Grendel recorded their second full-length release, entitled “Prescription : Medicide”. This album took another step deeper into the world of [Grendel] with it’s complex, yet harsh, pounding & danceable structures, dismal orchestration and distressed nature. It meant a big breakthrough for the band, recieving many great reviews, becoming album of the month in a.o. Zillo and Orkus plus reaching top 5 positions in underground charts world wide.
Later, “Soilbleed” was released, which instantly became an unmissable dancefloor classic. This gained a huge amount of support, great reviews and maintained top 5 positions in a.o. the DAC & DUC for maximum periods. As a consequence of this EP’s success, the band was highly occupied with performances and tours world wide for the next year and a half.
In 2006, VLRK and new members found time to work on their third full length album entitled “Harsh Generation”. This album marked new territory for the band, which a more matured sound and style, gaining more support and success & taking them to the top of the genre. After it’s release in early 2007, this album remained on top 5 positions (often peaking at no. 3) on the DAC and GEWC and remained there for maximum periods of time.
Due to the success of this album, Grendel spent the following years touring intensively worldwide and drawing increasingly larger audiences. Eventually, in 2009, the “Chemicals + Circuitry” EP was written & recorded. This turned out to be a slight diversion from the band’s familiar sound, exploring different sounds and styles. Luckily the response to this was positive, again reaching top 5 positions in the charts and becoming a staple record for EBM/Industrial DJs across the globe.
Finally, Grendel is back in the studio producing their upcoming album “Timewave : Zero”, which is set for release on April 24, 2012. With this new release, Grendel both return to their signature sound and take it further into new territories, continuing their tradition of delivering cutting edge Harsh EBM!

ELECTRONIC SAVIORS II – RECURRENCE
Cancer has ruined the lives of countless people around the world. Rarely in the international goth-industrial scene does one hear about it. On May 1st, 2008, Jim Semonik, longtime promoter, DJ, and frontman for electro-industrial band Rein[Forced], was diagnosed with stage 2B colorectal cancer. During a rigorous campaign of chemotherapy and radiation, Semonik’s passion for this music did not waver. On June 28th, 2008, 16 Volt’s Denial Highway Tour came through Pittsburgh courtesy of Jim. It was at this event that Semonik formulated the idea for a compilation that would not only be gargantuan in scale, but in quality as well. Jim asked 16 Volt frontman, Eric Powell, to be a part of it. Eric didn’t hesitate and thus Electronic Saviors was born.
When a person is stricken with a disease like cancer, it is important for the individual to not only focus on beating the disease, but have a goal for how to do it. Electronic Saviors is Jim’s way of not only giving back to the medical community that saved his life, but the goth-industrial community that he has so warmly embraced for the better half of his life. It is Jim’s way of crushing cancer once and for all.
In fall/winter of 2008, Semonik lost a portion of his digestive system and had to undergo a grueling program of post op chemotherapy. Jim almost lost his life due to a pancreatic infection from the chemo. This made the compilation of utmost importance. After recovering he began contacting bands throughout the scene that he had worked with and shared a great relationship with. It was not long before bands like Suicide Commando, Assemblage 23, Chemlab, Caustic, and his own band Rein[Forced] would begin to work on all exclusive tracks and mixes for what would become one of the biggest compilations the scene has ever seen.
It has been decided at this time that Gilda’s Club/Cancer Support Community (http://www.gildasclub.org/) and The Bone Marrow Foundation (http://www.bonemarrow.org/) is on the wish-list to send the proceeds to.
This will be a giant 6 disc box-set with 105 artists and 2 additional discs worth of digital tracks for a grand total of 141 tracks total. There will be a standard 6 CD edition, a deluxe digital edition only sold through Metropolis Records’ website as well as a premium edition which will include a physical double CD (high quality pressed cdr) of the 37 digital tracks for those that want them. The number of copies will be specified when we gauge how in demand these will be. We want this project to be a big success and everyone is working very hard to bring this to you in a way that will move every listener. All I can say is “WOW” when I listen to these tracks. We have a number of brand new tracks, new remixes and some tracks licensed from Europe that have never been on CD in the United States before.
