The talented Nathan Reiner from Buffalo, New York is the mastermind behind the darkwave/industrial project Third Realm. Romantic Death, the third full-length album released a few months ago seems to be the gothier follow-up to Third Realm’s previous album Love Is The Devil.

The album starts off with “Kiss of the Scorpion”, an enchanting tale about a female scorpion killing her prey. I could not help but notice the first few minutes of the song reminded me of Nine Inch Nails. The next song “Burnt Offerings” has a bouncier beat with creepy vocals and is my favorite song from the album.  Carefully thought-out lyrics speak “of pleasure won’t seduce our lives”.  The track “Beyond Temptation” flows with the other songs well despite having the most distorted vocals on the album. I was surprised to hear “September’s Ashes” has a synthpop feel to it and the synthesizers worked well with the vocals.

My first impressions of the album was it was very goth and emotional (too emotionally deep for my taste). However, the album grew on me.  If you really listen to the lyrics and the technical work in the music the album is great as a whole. What I enjoyed about the album is that each track flowed very well together, one song would have an enchanting sadness to it then lead into the next song which might have lighter industrial beats, each song takes you on an emotional journey. Third Realm is classified as Dark Alternative and I believe they define that genre.
