Far too often a remix album is comprised of a few select tracks remixed repeatedly, with an obvious lean toward the dance floor. Not so, here. Rather than a series of oontzy beats and extended club versions, An Alternative Solution is exactly that, offering up the same 11 tracks in the same order as A Perfect Solution with each remixed by a different artist.
I don’t know if it’s intent or happy accident, but the artists who have rebuilt these songs seem to have been matched perfectly. SMP’s hauntingly beautiful Deathproof mix of “It’s Gone†is a lush and moody soundscape, while the Parralox remix of “Hopes, Dreams†will make you feel like you’re doing The Safety Dance at an 80s night. Iris brings an amped up and fuller sound to “Is It So Hard?â€, Portion Control delivers a mellow, glitchy noise take on “The Bitter Endâ€, and Informatik shift the tempo while  increasing the angst with their Restraining Order remix of “Want Youâ€. And these aren’t all of my favorites.
An Alternative Solution feels like a good mix CD that you can listen to all the way through, and repeat. Each artist delivers their interpretation without obliterating the original song, yet each track has an appealing uniqueness. You can feel all of the passion and emotion of the original while reveling in the varied spices of the reworks. Essentially it’s Mesh…Only Better.
