The shorten version of the story goes as such; Guy meets girl while visiting L.A. then he goes back home, girl writes song and uploads onto the Internet, guy hears it and contacts her, year of phone calls plus online collaboration until finally boy goes back to L.A. and drives girl back to Nashville. Somewhere in that story he buys her a magic wand as a gift and the final outcome is (drum roll, please) the duo known as Magic Wands. Aloha Moon is Magic Wands’ first full length album with a handful of the tracks appearing on their first two EP’s. I do not have access to these singles so I am unsure how much has been changed but let us just stick with what we have on this album. The duo that makes up Magic Wands is Chris and Dexy Valentine and with them naming their own genre as “lovewave” the Valentine last name is fitting. I admit I was a bit skeptical on seeing them creating their own genre label but after many listens and also realizing that most genre names are silly, I have to admit that this works. (more…)

Stromkern – Dead Letters
Release Date: March 13, 2012
Label: WTII Records

Review by: DeVico

It has been a long seven years since we last heard an album from Stromkern but finally we have a new EP out with the promise of a second new EP to be put out by mid-Summer. When it comes to hip hop vocals and Post Industrial Rock compositions, there is a bit in me that would normally shudder. Granted, that is due to seeing hip hop mixed into Metal many years ago and especially in certain main stream movie soundtracks. Stromkern though, hits the pavement and leaves a pretty damn good mark on the burning asphalt. If you look back to their first single you even find that it peaked at #4 in the German Alternative Charts, which pisses me off to no end that I have just now run into their music (and to rub the sore spot on me, this act is from the US Mid West and I have not seen them on any charts here). Okay, sorry for the tad banter, let’s talk about Dead Letters. (more…)

Acretongue – Strange Cargo
Release Date: January 10, 2012
Label: Metropolis Records
Website: acretongue.com

Review by: DeVico

Even though you can find Acretongue’s 2007 debut Nihil on Bandcamp, Strange Cargo is really their commercial debut release. Released in Europe by Dependent Records in October of 2011 and then picked up by the good folks at Metropolis Records and given a nice US release this month, Strange Cargo was a fantastic way to enter the new year. Hailing from South Africa, Acretongue is the one man project of Nico J.. Fans of Seabound, Edge of Dawn, and Haujobb will find this album a nice warm home, especially since Nico J. has done remixes for all those just mentioned.

Review by: DeVico

Coming from two former members of And One, we have PAKT’s first EP Freiheit. Chris Ruiz and Gio van Oli offer us two songs plus three remixes on this small package. You have the earlier And One sound at time but there is a more prominent Industrial Rock sound than the listed EBM I keep seeing tagged onto them. (more…)

Binary Park – The Deviated
Release Date: October 11, 2011
Label: Metropolis Records
Website: facebook.com/ binarypark

Review by: DeVico

Binary Park offers up seven new tracks plus three remixes with one of them from their previous album World Collides on The Deviated. This three person act consists of Huw Jones on vocal and both Alfred Gregl and Torben Schmidt creating most of the music. “The Hidden Room” and “Lick the Blade” are both instrumentals and are the weakest points on this album. This is not saying that they are bad, just that they left me wanting something more within them. (more…)

Absolute Body Control – Wind[Re]Wind
Release Date: October 11, 2011
Label: Metropolis Records
Website: myspace.com/absolutebodycontrol

Review by: DeVico

Absolute Body Control is one of those early 80′s acts that many may not be aware of, but you will know the members, Dirk Iven and Eric Van Wonterghem (who joined in 1981 to replace Mark de Jonghe on synths), from the various projects they have had their long reaching hands in (together and/or separate); The Klinik, Insekt, Monolith, Dive, Blok 57 & Sonar. ABC (for typing shorthand of Absolute Body Control) gives us a great audio history of their works on this album ranging from 1981 to 2008. Late 70′s influence of the likes of Suicide is quite evident within the repetitive synth percussion and melody. My most difficult issue with this album is the fact that it created nostalgia for me and I kept drifting away instead of actually trying to put this work to words…on that note, please be patient. Maduro – Black Magic Kingdom
Release Date: October 31, 2011
Label: Octofoil Records
Website: facebook.com/maduropage

Review by: DeVico

Some times it is best to start straight from the press release:

“…is a concept album highlighting the American occult tradition in the context of New Orleans voodoo, magic, and spiritual totems. It is a gothic cacophony of distorted breakbeats, voodoo rhythms, vocal chanting, hip hop and industrial progressions, street-sampled tarot readings, jazz brass stabs and ragtime piano bursts. The album was spawned from field recordings in the New Orleans French Quarter in the summer of 2011 and conjures dreams of hidden rituals, funeral dirges and speakeasy cabarets.”

Happy 5th Birthday COMA Music Magazine!

October 27, 2011 marks the fifth birthday of COMA Music Magazine, which for us is a pretty significant event. The past year has seen lots of growth, some frustration and a whole lot of awesomeness. Alfa Matrix released the first Depeche Mode tribute album back in May of 2009 with successful feedback. The label bands persisted for a second volume. Thankfully, Alfa Matrix listened and two years later we have Alfa Matrix Re:Covered Vol.2 – A Tribute To Depeche Mode. While we have many that were seen on the first volume, we now have the additions of acts such as Unter Null, Alien Vampires, Studio-X, amGod, and Diskonnekted, just to name a few. (more…)

:Rivet: Hatemagick – Hellfire

Hatemagick – Hellfire
Release Date: 2011
Label: Self Release
Website: http://hatemagick.com

Review by: DeVico

Hellfire is the fourth release by Hatemagick, the solo work by Jon Andre Lundal from Norway. Prolific would be a good choice of words since he started this project less than a year ago. This release differs greatly from his others due the obvious lack of vocals on most of the tracks. The songs “Darkness” and “Black as midnight” seem to be the only ones with Lundal’s vocals, even these being minimal. Hatemagick has all his albums available as free downloads and this one clocks in at a short 26 minutes.
