In May 2011, two of my DJ friends came home from the Kinetik Festival brimming with excitement about a band called Phosgore. They played some tracks at local clubs, and I was instantly addicted. In November of 2011, Phosgore unleashed their new album Warhead, and if you’ll pardon the pun, it has exploded out of the gate and up the charts with damned good reason. Warhead is everything I love about big, loud, crunchy, hard, stompy dark music infused with a completely infectious bouncy hardstyle/chip-tune psycho energy. It’s the happiest angry music ever! The overall effect is that you can fly down the highway bouncing in the driver’s seat singing along to “Fuck You” and “20 Ways To Kill Someone” with a giant grin on your face. Columbia’s Terrorkode are a band that I would put into the same musical grouping as musical artists such as Soman and Modulate. You know what I mean; big bass, sharp synths, samples, and virtually no vocal presence. To me, this has always been a musical style designed more for the dance floor than for private listening, and I’ve never been a big fan of this style. That’s not to say it doesn’t have its merits or isn’t good, it’s just not my kinda’ thing. (more…)
