In the press released I received along with KMFDM’s latest album, Kunst (feel free to have fun with the pronunciation), I expected the standard dribble that all PR reps have been writing for decades. But the opening sentence “With three decades of historic, groundbreaking musical mayhem behind them…” made me sit back for a moment and think. Thirty years is a hell of a long time for any artist to maintain relevance. (more…)

Tempe, Arizona, United States @ The Clubhouse

After slaving all Sunday making tutus for the Oontzcast girls and myself, I drove to Cubel’s palce to get ready fro the “zomgitsfuckingfree†KMFDM show. We did up our faces (I even put on lashes) and donned out tutus and rushed like crazy people to get to the venue, The Clubhouse, because we’d gotten a call from fellow COMA monkey, Noelle, warning us that the place had a huuuge line outside. We arrived, tulle a-flurry, to a line, but nothing that was going to immediately pack the place. Bear in mind that Phoenix has a relatively small industrial scene, and while KMFDM appeals to a great cross section of metal & rivetheads, there was still plenty of room for everyone when we got there 30 minutes before the doors opened. Honestly, I was surprised by that. I mean, “OMFGKMFDM,†but it was a Monday night show, so likely all the “lucky†bastards who had jobs were still changing into their Slayer t-shirts, beat up jeans, and boots after escaping their cubicles slash convenience stores slash glorified mall rat positions. Do I really need to give a summary of KMFDM’s career and history? Started by its sole constant member Sascha Konietzko way back in 1984, KMFDM really burst onto the scene in late 80s early 90s offering a different aspect to the industrial music scene then dominated by Ministry, Skinny Puppy and Nine Inch Nails. After nearly 30 years, KMFDM have released the album WTF?!–no translation necessary.
The album starts off with the track “Krank”, which was also the first single from the album release back on March 8, 2011. Starting with a steady beat and driving synth, the track starts slowly, building with an ultimate climax introduced by the addition of a gritty guitar riff. “Krank” is a very strong track and it is easily apparent why it was chosen as the single for this album. There is such a range of melodies and sounds it is the perfect introduction to the album.
