:2012 Year in Review: Maresa Whitehead – COMA Reviewer

2012-doomsdayMy 2012 year-in-review is really just the latter-half-of-2012-in-review, considering I was all but dead while finishing the thesis for my MFA degree throughout the first five months. Even when I emerged from the black depths of self-induced sequester, my caffeine-laden, sleep-deprived, student-loan-indebted soul didn’t get a chance to hear many of this year’s new albums. But that certainly doesn’t mean I didn’t find my favorites! (more…)

Various Artists – Electronic Saviors Volume II Recurrence
Release Date: May 8, 2012
Label: Metropolis Records
Website: electronicsaviors.com

Review by: DeVico

Jim Semonik is back with the second compilation installment of Electronic Saviors and this time, the ceiling has been lifted to become an even huger and massive compilation. With proceeds going to at least two charities: Gilda’s Club/Cancer Support Community and The Bone Marrow Foundation you get the chance to help others and build your music library. ES Volume 1 was a sold out product on Metropolis Records and with good fortune, I am hoping they have the same scenario with ES Volume 2. The premium edition of ES 2 comes with six CD’s and two digital discs. This compilation clocks at 142 tracks with over 10 hours of play. Seriously, this is a juggernaut of music. (more…)

COMA Music Magazine Fundraiser 2012

So what is this fundraiser all about? Well, we have shot all our live footage with the same $200 camera for the last five years and now that camera is starting to fail. This presents the perfect opportunity to upgrade to hi def for more awesome videos and the camera I have found? Holy shit is it perfect for live footage.

In addition to that, US Airways busted the main lens I shoot live photography with when we went to Cyber Genetic Winter Fest so that needs to be replaced as well. So that, in a nutshell is what we are trying to accomplish here. Take a look at the incentives and be ready because it goes live at 10am MST March 14th, 2012.

:The View from the Stairs: Triptych Tour (San Francisco)

I would like to introduce my daughter, and newest COMA contributor, Matea. She is eleven and a half years old and has been attending concerts with me since she first saw VNV Nation at five years old. She has seen over twenty shows in all and continues to add to that number. Her new column, The View from the Stairs, refers to her usual post at the DNA Lounge (where we see a large percentage of our shows) in San Francisco. She has stood on the stairs next to the stage since the DNA went all ages three years ago. She has met, and even been on stage with some of the biggest names in our scene, but to her it is just all part of the fun. She will be sharing her concert stories and memories with you and this is her first try… we hope you like it… (more…)

System Syn – All Seasons Pass
Release Date: October 11, 2011
Label: Metropolis Records
Website: systemsyn.com

Review By: Drln Nki Nicosia

I have been listening to System Syn for several years now and I am always surprised by the System Syn of the CDs and the live incarnation… I always think of their energy and raw emotions on stage. I forget about the different styles that they incorporate into each CD. Their newest release All Seasons Pass is no different, and as always, I was unsure what to think until my second or third listen. They seem to manage to have a track that fits nearly everything that has been happening in the scene during the past couple of years while managing to not sound trendy or cliché. That is a very hard line to walk, especially when the main creative force in the band is involved in SO many other projects. Somehow, Clint Carney manages to bring his energy and talent to everything he does, while maintaining the individuality of each band. Now performing on the Triptych Tour, System Syn will be earning the notice of an entire new legion of fans… and Clint will be the hardest working musician ever, playing a role in all three bands – God Module and Imperative Reaction being the other two. :Concert Review: Triptych Tour (Chicago)

Triptych Tour Featuring Imperative Reaction, God Module, System Syn & Twitch The Ripper
Joined by Bella Morte and Ludovico Technique
September 27, 2011
Chicago, Illinois, United States @ Reggie’s Rock Club

Review by: Michael Faries

COMA’s own Christina did such a fine job of reviewing the first stop of the Triptych tour that I decided to do a (fairly) straight forward, comparative review.  This time around, the Triptych tour (consisting of God Module, Imperative Reaction, and System Syn) made a stop in Chicago, Illinois, to visit their Midwest fans.  Twitch the Ripper again accompanied the trio, but was joined this time by The Ludovico Technique and Bella Morte.  Scary Lady Sarah magnificently DJ’d the entire night, and, to my own personal delight, gave my camera a repeated and much-needed power strip connection.  Had it not been for this scary lady (which my Chicagoan friends informed me, was a really awesome lady, to boot), there would have been no live video of the show to share with COMA viewers. Triptych Tour – Imperative Reaction, God Module, System Syn with Twitch The Ripper and BlakOPz
September 23, 2011
Tempe, Arizona, United States @ The Clubhouse Music Venue Presented by 13th Floor Entertainment

Review by: Christina Cubel

The five-week Triptych Tour started in Tempe, Arizona on September 23, 2011. The Oontz mobile was on the way to The Clubhouse music venue and contained most of the Arizona COMA crew: commander J Tiffany Noelle, Nicole, and me (Christina). Everyone was excited for the show because you cannot beat the line-up which included BlakOPz Twitch the Ripper, System Syn, God Module and Imperative Reaction. We arrived at the venue ten minutes before the doors opened and were joined by Dawne; the Arizona crew was complete and ready to conquer this shit. (more…)

Guest: Ben Arp of C/A/T, Captive Six, Ben Arp and Crunch Pod Records

If you didn’t get to listen in this Tuesday, you really need to download this episode as we hear from Ben Arp and the new compilation off his label Crunch Pod Records: Justicia Pro Bestia. Justicia Pro Bestia (Justice for Animals) is a collection of artists who believe that animals deserve their own rights and much more. All the proceeds from the sale of this digital compilation will be donated to The Animal Legal Defense Fund. Along with promoting this great album (of which I play 6 songs ) Ben goes on to let us know about the upcoming new releases coming out on Crunch Pod this Fall, and also the upcoming releases with his own projects. If this is not a good enough reason to listen, just get this to hear me literally trip over my own tongue in trying to introduce Ben Arp in the interview. Really stompy set with new music from Gothsicles, Alien Vampires, Manufactura and Uberbyte to name just a few.

Review by: William Dashiell Hammett

Since 1979 The Animal Legal Defense Fund have been fighting for animal rights, domestic and wild, by working to improve and expand laws protecting animals and to help make penalties against animal abusers much tougher.  In association with Crunch Pod, the electronic music label founded by Ben Arp, comes the compilation album Justicia Pro Bestia containing 24 previously unreleased songs and/or remixes from an exceptionally diverse group of artists from across the spectrum of electronic music.

:News: Crunch Pod Annouces JUSTICIA PRO BESTIA Charity Compilation

Throughout much of the United States animals have about as many rights as a piece of furniture. There are more laws protecting your car then there are for animals. They are considered nothing more than “property” and do not deserve any rights. People who abuse them usually get little to no punishment for the suffering they cause.   It’s time for that to change. VNV Nation – Faith, Power, and Glory Tour
Guest opener:  System Syn
March 30, 2010
Pop’s Small Room – Sauget, IL

Review by: Amy Reynolds

VNV Nation is a music group that is a must see when they tour. With the combination of Ronan Harris’ lyrics and Mark Jackson’s music talent, these two are sure to put on a superbly entertaining performance. This concert was no exception.

The venue was impressive. Pop’s is an indoor facility with a full bar, darts, pool, restrooms, plenty of floor space, tables situated in the rear of the floor, and a closed in beer garden. Though not very large, it did not lack space for the guests. The building was clean and the staff was very friendly. A food stand was parked at the front entrance with a selection broad enough to sate anyone’s appetite.

:Music News: Clint Carney joins God Module

On God Module’s Facebook page Jasyn Bangert posted the following:

We are very glad to announce that Clint Carney has become a official member of God Module. Clint has been a close friend of the ours for quite a few years now, and with our shared interests and passion for music, it always seemed fated we would work together one day. Clint performed live with God Module for the first time on several dates of the “Magic In My Heart Is Dead” Tour in March and we are happy to now have him move into that spot on a permanent basis. Clint will, of course, be continuing his role in Imperative Reaction, as well as his own project, System Syn. With God Module, he will be able to further explore the more horrific and disturbing aspects of his art, as seen in his paintings and writings. Not only will he be taking over synths and random vocal duties live onstage as a member of God Module, but he will also contribute to the creation of new God Module music in the studio. Courtney and Jasyn are both looking forward to working with Clint as God Module moves forward and continues to create the soundtrack for your most beautifully fucked up nightmares.

Byron Miller is no longer associated with God Module. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

I guess that means Clint will be even busier these days. Good luck to Jasyn, Courtney and Clint and good luck to Byron on all your future projects.
